Covetable...Woman by Common Projects

Collaboration between Flavio Girolami and Prathan Poopat started in 2004 in an attempt to create the perfect sneaker. With backgrounds in graphics and industrial design, they are inspired by the lines and shapes of everyday objects. Pieces are designed with a tailored approach, integrating minimal utilitarian design with luxury materials.

Covetable...Henrik Vibskov

Henrik Vibskov was born in 1972 in Jutland, Denmark, graduating in menswear from Central Saint Martins College, London, in 2001. In addition to producing fashion collections with titles such as "The Solar Donkey Experiment: and "The Fantabulous Bicycle Music Factory", Vibskov tours as the drummer for electronic band Trentemoller, designs costumes for the theatre and opera, and exhibits at art museums and galleries around the world, such as MoMA in New York, Palais de Tokyo in Paris and ICA in London. His designs have received numerous awards including the 2011 Torsten and Wanja Soderberg Prize, the Danish Design Council Award 2007, and a Praemieringen from the Danish Arts Foundation in 2009. He is a frequent lecturer at design schools such as Central Saint Martins and the Antwertp Royal Academy of Fine Art.

A while back in a Home Tour post, I featured residential designer Mel McDaniel's fabulous apartment in West Philadelphia. This amazing soap import from Sweden has quickly found a cult following in the US. My darling husband gifted me a bar in my Christmas stocking this year, and I was smitten at once.  Delicious fragrance and large pieces of sea salt (the perfect exfoliant) will have you using this day and night.  I buy it by the case.

Blurring the division between the sexes, the collection is refined, androgynous and elegant. I love the Cali in low, the stacked wooden platform is an elegant take on the classic creeper.

"Opening Ceremony was founded in 2002 by two friends from UC Berkeley, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, as a place to share their passions for travel, art, and fashion. Inspired by a trip to Hong Kong, the two decided to leave their jobs in corporate fashion to realize their unique dream. I accidentally stumbled upon this gorgeous bag by eponymous french line Le Vestiaire de Jeanne and was instantly smitten.  Made from exquisite leathers and linen this line of clothing for men, women, and children is the epitome of easy cool and oh so chic.  The cabas totes are my favorite (of course) but the home collection of linens and vintage objet truvee are equally covetable.

Born in Hartford, Connecticut, 1973. Rachel Comey studied sculpture at University of Vermont; moved to New York and designed costumes for theatre and musicians. Former Theory design consultant. Launched New York-based line in 2001 as menswear only, bought by women in small sizes. Began women's collection in 2003. Comey's work for Gogol Bordello featured in the 2002 Whitney Biennial. Known for her exclusive prints and attention to detail. Shoe line for both men and women, born of difficulty in finding the right shoes to style her runway collection. Design facilitated by her background in sculpture. Ethically made in Peru, you can find mens and women's collection at her site and at online stores Totokaelo and Creatures of Comfort.

Covetable...Whyred

With the vision of building a label that could give the consumer a modern experience and exceed the expectations with regard to design and quality, friends Roland Hjort, Lena Patriksson Keller and Jonas Clason founded Whyred in 1999. The name came from chief designer Roland Hjort’s grandfather, the prominent Swedish artist Sven ”X” Erixon. Asked in a radio interview in the early 50s to tell his favourite colour, Sven answered: ”Red”."Why red?”, the interviewer retorted. Known for his rich palette of colours Sven dryly quipped:”Well, blue then”.

Taking good tailoring, contemporary music and the art world as its point of departure, Whyred has earned the epithet the Indie super label. 

Covetable...Blackstone

Blackstone established in 1992 is a Dutch brand from a third generation family company. It started as a worker brand, and evolved into a design driven brand with a clear signature.  Very hard to find in the US and they as yet do not ship outside of the EU. But you can shop there collection online here. Blackstone footwear combines modern styling with high-quality materials. Already a major player in the European fashion industry, Blackstone is making a splash in North America by producing shoes that are as comfortable as they are fashionable.

Utilitarian chic, I say. We love Filson for making the kind of bags that can withstand decades of toting things heavy and not. Employing just the right balance between function and fashion.  Today's Filson is finding a home on the best dressed shoulders all around town.

Seeking inspiration from music, photography and art, François produces eclectic designs, with a feminine yet functional aesthetic, often collaborating with urban artists on limited edition pieces and accessories.
