About a Girl...Olivia Gorman

Olivia is a junior in high school, a top ranked recruit for woman's college basketball, a promising young sculptor, and has a shoe collection that would make you cry.

What gets you excited about the future?


The future is so exciting to me because it is a mystery and anything can happen. The future allows the imagination to run wild because the possibilities and opportunities are endless when you have a dream for the future and you work hard to achieve that dream.


Who are your heroes?


I would have to say my parents, but also my brothers and my grandpa. The qualities and ideals that exist in them have shaped me. They have shown me that there are times to be serious and hard working, but there are also times when it is important to have fun and enjoy life. My parents have also shown me that an essential part to a happy life is good food.


How would you describe your style?


My style is all about the shoes. An outfit is not truly complete until it is finished off with a pair of shoes.

About a Girl: Rebecca Aranow

Rebecca Aranow is a junior in high school. She has great taste in music, is loyal to the core, and can rock gladiator boots like no one I know.

What gets you excited about the future?

Well, after watching so much Sex and the City I’ve dreamed of having the chance to be that “small girl in the big city”.  I have gone to the same school since kindergarten, I have had the same best friends for most of my life, and I have gone to the same summer camp since I was seven, so I have been in a certain comfort zone for most of my life. ‬But when I start to think about my future, although it is a little scary sometimes for me to not know where I want to end up, it is also exciting to be able to go out into the world without a plan.

Who are your heroes?

When I think about my heroes I think about my grandmothers; the three people who I look up to and aspire to be. My Mommom Marcy, as a mother and housewife, decided to attend law school despite the fact that she had two children to take care of, showing me that anything is possible and nothing can hold you back. My Mommom Cathy was a single mother who not only had to take care of my uncle, but also my father who was a devil child. Through her adult life she jumped from career to career- from radio host, to writer, to designer representative, to photographer, just to name a few- becoming great at her momentary passion before she got bored and moved on to become great at something else. My Mommom Rara is one of the goofiest and happiest people I know and always reminds me to be happy, keep smiling, and take advantage of every second of every day. Her motto, “I love my family”, is simple but emphasizes the importance of a strong family bond,
one which I have with all of my family. My grandmothers have truly shaped me as a person and they are my biggest heroes.

How would you describe your personal style?

I don’t see myself as someone who has one style. I tend to dress differently
depending on my mood, and I try to not let myself be defined by one look. Some
days I like to be a little more edgy, whether that means wearing all black with
studded boots or pairing leather pants with a flannel button down. And other
days I dress more boho or casual chic with a simple oversized sweater, jeans and
brown boots. But whatever person I decide to be for the day I always try to dress
simple with just one standout piece while also wearing things that people wouldn’t
typically think to put together as an outfit.

About a Girl...An interview with Laura Conn

Laura is a college freshman, a talented photographer, super grounded and committed to serving people in need.

What gets you excited about the future?

For most of my life I've heard that once you get out of high school the world is open for anything. I don't know if that's true yet, but I'm excited for that possibility.  I love pushing myself out of my comfort zone and experiencing new things. 

Who are your heros?

I would definitely say that my parents are my heroes. The two of them balance each other out so well. My mom is truly selfless, and connects with everyone she meets. My dad works so hard everyday; always reminding my sisters and I that hard work pays off. They are my role models and I strive to be a combination of their greatest qualities. 


How would you describe your personal style? 

My personal style has always been simple, laid back and classic. Comfort is a necessity for me no matter the occasion.   I tend to wear the same necklace and earrings  everyday, but i love combining different types of gold and colorful bracelets to make it unique.   I also love to add a few trendier and chic items to my collection but still stay true to my understated and more elegant style.

Kate is a high school senior, is whip smart, and plays a mean game of water polo when she is not winning national titles in a double (crew) scull.

What gets you excited about the future?

The fact that I can create my own future, I don't need to wait for other people or events to shape it for me.

Who are your heros?

Queen Elizabeth I, Susan Francia (3 time Olympic rowing champion), Hillary Clinton, Sitting Bull, Ghandi and my parents.  

How would you describe your personal style?

A mash-up of everything: preppy, western, 80s, punk, boho, classic and vintage (a personal favorite) .  Over time I have incorporated styles that I admire or am just exposed to into my own personal look. 

About a Girl: An Interview with Caroline Sloane

Caroline is a high school freshman, has preternatural design skills, and a gorgeous easy smile.

What gets you excited about the future?

The Future. It holds so much that is not accessible just yet. I do not take for granted the advantages and opportunities I have and will be presented with throughout my lifetime. I hope to make a name for myself. I do not intend to watch my life go by. I hope to make a difference, big or small. My goal will be to impact those around me. I want to see the world, and I want the world to see me. 

Who are your heroes?

Being a 15 year old girl my inspirations change daily. But some stick with me, I have an aunt named Kristine who I admire more than anyone. Art is loved throughout my family. Kristine was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis several years ago. What is so inspirational about her is even though she can not hold a pencil or paint brush straight she continues to make art; because art is what makes her happy so she works with what she has. Watching her from a distance over the years I've learned more than I can process but I take several important lessons from her. Do what makes you happy, do not focus on the bad but emphasize the good things, and do not take anything for granted. 

How would you describe your personal style?

Less is more. A classic comfy look is what I strive for. In the spring time a pair of ripped boy friend jeans, a classic plain tee, and a pair of vans is all I need. As the weather gets chilly a pair of well fitted darker jeans an over sized comfy sweater and worn in fryes is what I tend to live in. Living in a household of girls style is something we all focus on. Style tells more about a person than one thinks. It is a simple way to express ourselves everyday.

About a Girl...An interview with Anna Hallahan

Anna is a high school junior, an excellent photographer, and a really fast runner.

What gets you excited about the future?

The future holds endless opportunities that are bound to be great. I cannot wait to travel to new places, meet new people, and indulge in once-in-a-lifetime experiences. The idea of freedom and the ability to do anything I want to, to shape my own life is exciting.Especially because I am  at the time now when I am just beginning to break away from confinement and make my own decisions. 

Who are your heros?

I do not have one specific hero right now that I can identify with. However, recently I have been admiring Abraham Lincoln. His strong work ethic and rise from poverty, along with his high moral standards and good leadership skills- especially prevalent in the recent media buzz- definitely intrigues me. 

How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style has a classical and sophisticated feel with a blend of a simple, earthy easygoingness.Almost similar to a london schoolboy, I enjoy a classy look that is still comfortable and not overdone. I enjoy putting a unique twist on my outfits, such as vintage oxfords, but still appearing effortless. 

About A Girl...An interview with Jacqui Lawlor

Jacqui is a high school senior, a major talent as a young artist, and reflexively hopeful.

What gets you excited about the future?

So much about the future excites. Every time I read the travel section of the NY times or browse my favorite site thecoolhunter.net I find endless places where I'd like to travel. Now that I've found something I love and am excited about [art] I'm curious to see where this love takes me- I really have no idea. 

Who are your heros?

Wow heroes- I have so many. But to narrow it down many of my heroes are artists themselves...Maurizio Cattelan, Chuck Close, Paul Simon, Jay-Z, Jhumpa Lahiri, Al Green. The list could really go on, but what I admire about these artists is not just their dedication- that's a given - but the bravery and endurance it takes to pursue what you love - and the beautiful art they make. While reading about painting in a book that looked into the artist studio I came across a great Chuck Close quote: 

"Inspiration is for amateurs, the rest of us just show up and get to work". 

I think that quote stuck with me because as a young artist the reality of the insanely hard work that accompanies art making proves my love for the pursuit every day. 

How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style has changed over time. I have developed an intense distaste for anything trendy. I love sleek, boyish looks especially with a very feminine figure like my own. I also strive for a balance between modest like sophistication with a little bit of sexy. I try to work in a few playful, girls items with sleeker more boyish looks- that I think describes my personal style. I love vintage- who doesn't though? I admire women who incorporate ultra feminine styles with a piece in their outfit that is simple, and unisex. For example Miuccia Prada whom I am obsessed with and especially her known "uniform" of incredibly feminine, sometimes printed skirts paired with a simple- often v-neck, unisex sweater. I love her!
